If you like books, and you like
coffee...
Sappho is one of those wonderful bookshops you can spend
hours in, exploring all the byways of your interests (and
discovering a few more). Because they're nearly all
secondhand, you can even leave with a pile without increasing
your mortgage.
Upstairs is Da Capo Music, a specialist music bookshop with
one of the world's best ranges of antiquarian and secondhand
music books, scores and odds and ends.
Sappho also has an excellent café. And this is not one of
those tacked-on afterthought cafés. The café at Sappho makes
great coffee. The range of food is limited by the tiny
kitchen, but it's all carefully and thoughtfully done.
Recommended any time of the day. Though maybe not when the
weather's inclement - most of the seating is out the back in
the courtyard (worth visiting for its incredible graffiti
murals). Get their early on fine weekend mornings to beat the
almost-all-day-breakfast rush.
Finally, if you want new books, Glebe landmark Gleebooks is
right next door.
