Sappho Books, Cafe & Bar

We are one of Sydney's favourite general second-hand Bookstores. Walk through to our beautiful courtyard Cafe that transforms into a tapas Bar at night. We are also now home to Da Capo Music Bookshop, the only dedicated second-hand sheet music store in Australia. We buy and sell used books, sheet music and records, host live music and events and are available for venue hire.

Poetry Night November

On the FIRST Tuesday of November (not the usual second Tuesday) the poetry night at Sappho will play host to AVANT GAGA #27, with special guests John Kinsella and Tracy Ryan, who haven't read in Sydney for many years, plus Lorna Munro and Dan Hogan, and an open mic. So come, eat, drink, speak, breathe, read, watch, listen, etc. The bar will be open late. Free entry, as ever. 


is the author of many books of poetry, fiction and criticism. He is a frequent collaborator with other poets, critics, fictionalists, artists, musicians, labourers, activists and friends. Recent poetry includes Jam Tree Gully (WW Norton, 2012), Sack (Picador and Fremantle Press, 2014), Firebreaks (WW Norton, 2016) and Drowning in Wheat: Selected Poems (Picador, 2016); recent criticism includes Activist Poetics: Anarchy in the Avon Valley (ed. Niall Lucy, Liverpool University Press, 2010) and the forthcoming Polysituatedness: A Poetics of Displacement (Manchester University Press, 2017). He has edited many anthologies including the Penguin Anthology of Australian Poetry. John Kinsella is a Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge University, and Professor of Literature and Sustainability at Curtin University. He lives with poet and novelist Tracy Ryan, and their son Tim, at Jam Tree Gully in the Western Australian wheatbelt.

is a Western Australian writer who has also lived for long periods overseas. She has published four novels, with a fifth due out next year. She has also published eight books of poetry — most recently Hoard (Whitmore Press, 2015). A ninth book of poetry, The Water Bearer, will be published by Fremantle Press in 2018.

is a Wiradjuri/Gamilaroi artist/educator working with visual arts, poetry, performance, radio, film, television, theatre and set design. She calls the Redfern/Waterloo area home. She has performed extensively as a spoken word artist, including in the Sydney Writers Festival in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

is a writer from Sydney. His work as appeared in The Lifted Brow, LEFT, and Shabby Doll House, among others. He has performed his work at home and abroad. He was shortlisted for the Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize. He also co-runs the readings series ‘subbed in’.
