Sappho Books, Cafe & Bar

We are one of Sydney's favourite general second-hand Bookstores. Walk through to our beautiful courtyard Cafe that transforms into a tapas Bar at night. We are also now home to Da Capo Music Bookshop, the only dedicated second-hand sheet music store in Australia. We buy and sell used books, sheet music and records, host live music and events and are available for venue hire.

On the second Tuesday of March, the Sappho poetry night will host Alex Skovron, Robyn Rowland, Tricia Dearborn and Andy Kissane, plus the usual open mic section. Come along for tapas and drinks and smokes and bananas. 


is the author of six collections of poetry and a prose novella. The numerous public readings he has given include appearances in China, Serbia, India, Ireland, and on Norfolk Island. A bilingual selection of his poetry translated into French was published in 2013 under the title The Attic, a bilingual volume of Chinese translations is underway, and his novella The Poet has been translated into Czech. His latest book, Towards the Equator: New & Selected Poems (2014), was recently shortlisted in the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. A collection of his short stories is forthcoming from Puncher & Wattmann. 

is an Irish-Australian dual-citizen, annually visiting Ireland for thirty-three years, now living half-time in Connemara. She regularly visits and works in Turkey. She has written twelve books, nine of poetry. Her latest two books from 2015 are Line of Drift from Doire Press, Ireland, supported by the Irish Arts Council, and her bi-lingual This Intimate War Gallipoli/Çanakkale 1915 – İçli Dışlı Bir Savaş: Gelibolu/Çanakkale 1915 published by Five Islands Press in Australia and by Bilge Kultur Sanat in Turkey, sponsored by the Municipality of Çanakkale. Her work has appeared in seven Best Australian Poems (Black Inc.). 

’s poetry has been widely published in literary journals including Meanjin, Southerly, Overland and HEAT, and in anthologies such as Australian Poetry Since 1788, The Best Australian Poems 2012 and 2010, The Best Australian Poetry 2008 and Out of the Box: Contemporary Australian Gay and Lesbian Poets. A featured reader at many events, including the Sydney Writers’ Festival in 2012, she has received several grants from the (recently decimated) Australia Council. She has degrees in biochemistry and arts. Her most recent collection of poetry is The Ringing World, published by Puncher & Wattmann. 

writes poetry and fiction and has read his work in Ireland, England, Austria and many venues in Australia. He has published four books of poetry, including Radiance, which was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Prize for Poetry and the 2016 Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature. He is passionately interested in the short story and has written a book of short stories, The Swarm. He teaches English part-time in a senior high school in Casula and is currently working on a verse novel and a short story cycle.
