Avant Gaga #66: Boyle, Saleh, Lim, Taylor-Johnson

On the second Tuesday of March, the Poetry Night at Sappho plays host to AVANT GAGA #66, with guest poets Peter Boyle, Sara M Saleh, Debbie Lim, and Heather Taylor-Johnson, plus the usual open mic section. Free entry, with drinks and tapas available for purchase at the bar.
For open mic, sign-up is from 6:30pm at the venue on the night. 10 readers can perform for up to 2 minutes each, after the guest poets.
PETER BOYLE has published eleven books of poetry, including Ghostspeaking (Vagabond, 2016) and Enfolded in the Wings of a Great Darkness (Vagabond, 2019). His most recent collection is Companions, Ancestors, Inscriptions (Vagabond, 2024). His awards include the New South Wales Premier’s Prize, the Queensland Premier’s Prize and the South Australian Festival Award. He is a translator of poetry from French and Spanish with nine books of translation published, including poetry by José Kozer, Marosa Di Giorgio, Olga Orozco and Eugenio Montejo. He has published two collaborative books with Queensland poet MTC Cronin, most recently Who Was (Puncher and Wattmann, 2023). After many years working as a teacher with TAFE, he completed a Doctorate of Creative Arts at Western Sydney University. Peter lives and works on Dharug land.
SARA M SALEH is a writer/poet, human rights lawyer, and the daughter of Palestinian, Lebanese and Egyptian migrants. Her poems, essays and short stories have been published widely in English and Arabic. Her first novel Songs for the Dead and the Living (Affirm Press) and first full-length poetry collection The Flirtation of Girls/Ghazal el-Banat (UQP) were both released late 2023. Sara won both the 2021 Peter Porter Poetry Prize and the 2020 Judith Wright Poetry Prize and she is the recipient of the inaugural Affirm fellowship for Sweatshop writers, a Neilma Sidney travel grant, Varuna writers residency, and Amant writers residency in New York, amongst other shortlistings and honours. Sara is based on Bidjigal land with her partner and their four cats.
DEBBIE LIM was born in Sydney and her poems have appeared regularly in Black Inc.’s Best Australian Poems series and in Contemporary Asian Australian Poets, among other anthologies. Recent work appears in Island, Griffith Review, Cordite and Meanjin. She received the Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize in 2022 and has been shortlisted for the Peter Porter Poetry Prize. Her chapbook is Beastly Eye by Vagabond Press, and her first full-length collection, Bathypelagia, will be published by Cordite Books in early 2025. She lives in northern Sydney with her husband, son and a black foster cat.
HEATHER TAYLOR-JOHNSON lives and writes on Kaurna land. She received a 2-year fellowship from Arts SA to write essays for the next two years, which inevitably, in her world, leads to poetry as well. She’s writing her first essay now, while at the Whitlam Essay Residency in Cabramatta, though is having a little break to read read at Avant Gaga. Her last two books were a poetry collection called Alternative Hollywood Ending and a verse novel / epistolary thing called Rhymes with Hyenas. Her third literary novel will be out in August.
