Sappho Poetry Night AVANT GAGA #54: Mitchell, Chlopicki, Radiecska, Walsh, Wu

On the second Tuesday of August, the Poetry Night at Sappho will play host to AVANT GAGA #54, with guest poets Scott-Patrick Mitchell, Luke Patterson, Janet Jiahui Wu and Sophia Walsh, plus an open mic section. As ever, it’s FREE entry, and there are drinks and tapas at the bar.

SCOTT-PATRICK MITCHELL is a queer non-binary poet, writer and educator who lives in Boorloo, Western Australia. SPM’s work appears in Contemporary Australian Poetry, Stories of Perth and Solid Air. Their first collection, Clean (Upswell, 2022), is an exploration of their lived experience as a methamphetamine addict and details their recovery and reconnection to family, identity and ecology. Mitchell is also the current recipient of the 2022 Red Room Poetry Fellowship with a project that explores Perth Canyon and West Australian beaches and beach culture. SPM lives and writes on the unceded Land of The Whadjuk Noongar Nation.
LUKE PATTERSON unfortuantely has COVID, so will be replaced by readings from NIKO CHLOPICKI and ANASTASIA RADIEVSKA.
JANET JIAHUI WU is a poet and visual artist based in Sydney, Gadigal country. She is trying to get her first book out and she hates author’s biographies.
SOPHIA WALSH Walsh is a writer living in Naarm who recently completed studying creative writing at the University of Melbourne, where she wrote a thesis about hauntology and Helen Garner. You can read some of her other work in Westerly Magazine, Cordite Poetry Review, No More Poetry’s No No No Mag (Issue 1), and Overland.

OPEN MIC: To read in the open section, sign-up is at the venue on the night from 6:45pm. The open mic happens after the guest poets and up to 10 readers will read for up to 2 minutes each.
