Sappho serves up entertainment most nights, and you’ll always find something on – from our Poetry nights to Open Stage nights, and performances by our favourite local musicians.
Poetry Nights
Poetry nights are held on the second Tuesday of every month (except January) and have become renowned for their welcoming atmosphere and line-up of well known poets. Past featured poets have included Les Murray, Gig Ryan, David Malouf, Judith Beveridge, Pam Brown, Kate Lilley, joanne burns, Peter Minter, Kate Fagan, Robert Adamson, Peter Rose, Michael Farrell, Sarah Holland-Batt and Ali Whitelock, not to mention the dozens of emerging poets that the poetry night has fostered.
The night features three or four poets reading their own work, followed by open mic readings. Our host is Sydney-based poet Toby Fitch, the current poetry editor for Overland and author of Rawshock, Jerilderies and The Bloomin’ Notions of Other & Beau. There are a limited amount of spots available in the open mic section, so get in early by arriving by 6:45pm to sign up in person with Angélique. One poem each, up to 2 minutes.

Open Stage Night
Our beloved Open Stage night is held on the third Tuesday of every month (except January) at the Sappho Bar. There will be ten 8-minute open-performance slots available (though we often have room for more!). We encourage all sorts of performers to take part in our Open Stage nights, from music to comedy, performance poetry to acting scenes. If you are just starting out or want to test new material, this is an ideal platform as it is supportive and fun. More experienced artists and more polished material is also welcome and encouraged. Sign-up for the open section starts at 6:30 on the night, just ask for Cathal, the host, and the event kicks off around 7. Entry is free, and the bar will be selling drinks.
